Baby Bath Dangers
and Defects |
|
| Baby baths, bathtub seats
or bath rings can pose many dangers to babies and
toddlers. Common safety hazards that parents should
be aware of include defective fastening devices
such as suction cups that do not adhere properly
to the non-skid surfaces of newer bath tubs, and
safety clamps that become dislodged when tub walls
are wet. |
| More importantly,
as many consumer rights groups have argued,
these products generate a false sense of security
that has proven tragic in the past. According
to a consumer report produced by the Consumers
Union of U.S., over 120 infant drownings have
occured that have been associated with baby
bath devices since 1983. The Consumer Product
Safety Commission reported that in the year
2000, sixteen deaths occurred in conjunction
with a baby bath, seat, or ring. |

|
| Drownings
or other injuries may occur when the device fails
to remain upright, allows a child to slide through
the product restraints, or when an infant is able
to climb out of the device. Infants may also become
entrapped and submerged in the leg openings of
many bath seats. |
| The law in most states provides individuals with legal
claims and the right to compensation for injuries they suffer as a result
of a defective product or the negligence of another. The injured person
may file a lawsuit seeking compensation for his or her pain and suffering,
medical expenses, lost past and future wages and punitive damages. |
