Baby Changing Table Defects and Dangers

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, defective baby and toddler changing tables may cause cuts, catch body parts, fail to prevent children from falling, or tip-over due to a lack of stability.
Changing Table Safety Recalls
Recent changing table recalls include:
  • Childcraft Education Changing Table with Steps
In March 2005, Childcraft Education Corp. of Lancaster, Pennsylvania voluntarily recalled about 700 wooden changing tables with steps. When one of the front doors is open, a child's finger could reportedly become stuck inside spaces between parts of the hinges, causing finger crushing or pinching to occur while the door is closing.

  • Changing Tables Child Craft Industries
Child Craft Industries, of Salem, Ind., voluntarily recalled about 4,300 changing tables in May 2001. Some changing table joints were reportedly not properly glued and could separate, presenting a fall hazard to babies.
Legal Rights of the Injured
The law in most states provides individuals with legal claims and the right to compensation for injuries they suffer as a result of a defective product or the negligence of another. The injured person may file a lawsuit seeking compensation for his or her pain and suffering, medical expenses, lost past and future wages and punitive damages.
