Crib and Playpen Dangers
and Defects |
|
| Cribs and playpens can
pose serious dangers to babies and young children.
Defective slats can allow children to become entangled,
trapped, or strangled; defective bedding can lead
to airway obstruction; and defective design can
allow an infant to become trapped between the mattress
and the side of the crib. |
| Other hazards of defective
cribs include that they may not properly prevent
children under the age of two from climbing out
or falling out, have parts that are easily broken,
have sharp edges or points that may cause cuts/lacerations,
or are unstable and may lead to tipping over. |
| Currently there are
over 40 cribs that have been recalled, including: |
- Delta Enterprise Corp. Portable Cribs
In March 2005, Delta Enterprise Corp., of New York, New York voluntarily
recalled about 10,000 portable cribs. Reportedly, the crib slats
could separate from the headboard, posing an entrapment risk to young
children.
- Orbelle Trade Inc. Cribs
In January 2005, Orbelle Trade Inc.,
of Brooklyn, New York voluntarily recalled
about 7,700 Amber cribs. The Amber model
crib included in this recall purportedly
did not comply with crib safety standards
due to a gap between the side rail and
the crib mattress support, posing an entrapment
hazard to infants. All other model cribs
included in this recall do not have proper
assembly instructions and diagrams required
for cribs.

| The law in most states provides individuals with legal
claims and the right to compensation for injuries they suffer as a result
of a defective product or the negligence of another. The injured person
may file a lawsuit seeking compensation for his or her pain and suffering,
medical expenses, lost past and future wages and punitive damages. |
