Infant Carrier Dangers
and Defects |
|
| In 2003 the Consumer Product
Safety Commission identified injuries related to
infant carriers and seating as a top safety concern
for infants. In many instances infants may get
a body part caught or cut on the carrier, children
may fall out of the carrier, handles may become
unlatched or are unstable and result in tipping
over. In more severe cases, a child may become
face down in the carrier or seat, or become entangled
in restraint straps and suffer suffocation. |
| Recent infant carrier
recalls include: |
- Playtex Products Inc. Hip Hammock
Child Carriers
In February 2005, Playtex Products
Inc. of Westport, Connecticut recalled
approximately 32,000 Playtex Hip Hammocks.
The shoulder strap support reportedly can
detach from the hammock, posing a fall
hazard to the baby.

- Regal Lager "Baby Björn" Infant
Carriers
Regal Lager Inc., of Kennesaw, Georgia
voluntarily recalled certain Baby Björn
baby carriers in September 2004. The back support
buckle can detach from the shoulder straps,
posing a fall hazard to the baby.
- Dorel Juvenile Group Inc. Infant Car Seats/Carriers
In June 2003, Dorel Juvenile Group Inc.,
of Columbus, Indiana voluntarily recalled Cosco
Arriva and Turnabout infant car seats/carriers
to address a problem with the carry handle.
In July 1999, the two federal agencies and
Cosco, now known as the Dorel Juvenile Group,
announced the recall of 670,000 of these infant
car seat/carriers made from March 1995 through
September 1997. This recall added 1.2 million
of the same model infant car seats/carriers
made through January 2000.
When the seat is used as a carrier, the plastic handle locks can unexpectedly
break or release from the carrying position, causing the seat to unlatch
or flip forward. When this happens, an infant can fall to the ground
and suffer injuries.

| The law in most states provides individuals with legal
claims and the right to compensation for injuries they suffer as a result
of a defective product or the negligence of another. The injured person
may file a lawsuit seeking compensation for his or her pain and suffering,
medical expenses, lost past and future wages and punitive damages. |
