Dangerous Defective
Pacifiers,
Teething and Sucking Toys |
|
| Defective pacifiers and
teething toys can pose serious dangers to babies
and toddlers. Common safety hazards that parents
should be aware of include nipples that detach
from the base as well as other sectional pieces
that can separate and present choking hazards,
and teething toys that contain irritant glues or
fixatives or that can be bent so as to fit in an
infant's throat and thus present a choking risk. |
| As many consumer rights
groups have argued, products such as these,
intended for infants and marketed in part based
on safety representations, can generate a false
sense of security that has proven tragic in
the past. |
- In April 2005, the U .S. Consumer Product
Safety Commission announced a recall of
24,000 Flashing Pacifiers and 2-in-1 Flashing
Pacifiers with Whistle Necklace from Solar
Inc. of Tappan, N.Y. The nipple can detach
from the base, posing a choking hazard
to young children.

- In February 2005, 102,000 pacifiers were
recalled by Todo Dollar Wholesale, of Los Angeles,
California, also because the nipples could
detach from the base.
|
| The law in most states
provides individuals with legal claims and the
right to compensation for injuries they suffer
as a result of a defective product or the negligence
of another. The injured person may file a lawsuit
seeking compensation for his or her pain and suffering,
medical expenses, lost past and future wages and
punitive damages. |
