Bolthouse Carrot Juice Recall & Botulism Food Poisoning Update |
|
| On September 29, 2006, Wm. Bolthouse Farms of Bakersfield, California issued an international recall of its 100% Carrot Juice as a result of reports of botulism poisoning. Under certain conditions, carrot juice has the potential to develop botulism toxin, which can cause a sometimes fatal illness with paralysis and respiratory failure. So far, two cases in Toronto, Canada and four cases in the U.S. (Georgia & Florida) requiring hospitalization have been reported. |
| In some of the cases, it has been reported that the victims drank juice that had not been refrigerated properly. The United States Food and Drug Administration is currently looking into whether the industry is providing clear labeling on refrigeration of juice products during storage. |
| Bolthouse Farms, which grows carrots
in the Bakersfield Valley, California has recalled the carrot juice sold in the United States, Mexico, Canada and Hong Kong under
3 different brand names with "Best if Used by Dates" up to and including November 11, 2006. The brands affected are: |
- "Bolthouse Farms 100% Carrot Juice", sold in both 1 liter and 450 milliliter sizes
- "Earthbound Farm Organic Carrot Juice", sold in both 1 liter and 450 milliliter sizes
- "President's Choice Organics 100% Pure Carrot Juice" sold in both 1 liter and 450 milliliter sizes.
|
| Despite the recall, Canadian health authorities report Toronto health inspectors visited more than 500 stores over the weekend of October 7th and found 10 stores still had "suspect products" on the shelves, because some store managers had not heard about the health risk. |
| The official carrot juice recall follows a consumer adivisory issued by the United States Food and Drug Administration
(FDA) on September 17, 2006 warning consumers to properly refrigerate juice. On September 30, 2006, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) went further, warning consumers not to drink
certain brands of carrot juice due to botulism concerns. |
| Consumers have been told to discard the affected products produced by Bolthouse Farms. |
