Coleman Focus Heaters
and Carbon Monoxide Poisoning |
|
| Lieff Cabraser is investigating
potential defects in Coleman Focus propane heaters.
While the heaters are no longer manufactured, there
are as many as a million Focus heaters still in
use. |
| On June 29, 2005, a federal
jury in Miami ordered Coleman Co. to pay a Lake
Worth, Florida, woman $10.1 million in damages
in connection with an allegedly malfunctioning
propane heater that killed her husband and son
in 1999. |
| Her husband, Pedro Covas,
and her son, Rolando, died in November 1999 during
a hunting and camping trip. Pedro Covas apparently
brought a Coleman Focus-5 heater into their unventilated
tent and left it running while they slept. The
heater allegedly malfunctioned, filling the tent
with carbon monoxide gas that killed both father
and son. |
| There have been similar
wrongful death suits involving Focus heaters in
the past few years. The Coleman Co. manufactured
several versions of Focus heaters. The number after
the Focus name indicated how many BTUs of heat
the device could produce. |
| Started in the early 1900s,
the Coleman Co. is perhaps the most recognized
brand name in camping equipment, such as propane
lanterns and stoves. The company has more than
2,000 employees worldwide. Coleman, which was acquired
by Jarden Corp. in January, earned more than $800
million in revenues last year, according to Jarden's
most recent annual report. |
| The law in most states provides individuals with legal
claims and the right to compensation for injuries they suffer as a result
of a defective product or the negligence of another. The injured person
may file a lawsuit seeking compensation for his or her pain and suffering,
medical expenses, lost past and future wages and punitive damages. |
