Exercise Equipment: Risk of Finger & Limb Injuries

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) estimates that each year about 8,700 children under 5 years of age and 16,500 children ages 5 to 14 are injured by exercise equipment. Types of equipment identified in these cases include stationary bicycles, treadmills, and stair climbers.
According to the CPSC, the hazards posed by exercise equipment are usually not obvious. Injuries often occur when children put their fingers near the moving parts of the equipment, which can lead to lacerations, crushing or even amputation of fingertips. Adults are also at risk of finger injuries in some cases.
Exercise Equipment Recalls and Warnings
  • In November 2004, CPSC announced voluntary repair recalls of the Ab Lounge, Ab Lounge 2 and Ab Lounge Ultimate exercise devices, distributed by Fitness Quest, Inc. When folding or un-folding these machines, consumers catch their fingers in the hinges, which can result in lacerations, crushing or amputation of fingertips. At the time of recall, Fitness Quest had received 15 reports of such injuries.

  • In November 1992 Weider Sporting Goods, Inc., implemented a repair program for certain E-130 Series Exercise Benches. The moving part of the leg extension bar reportedly posed a risk of entrapping consumers’ fingers, and had resulted in serious lacerations and partially amputated fingers. At the time of the repair program, at least 36 such injuries had been reported.

  • In May 1991, CPSC issued a warning of the danger of finger amputation associated with the Merchant’s Corporation of America model ST-81 exercise bikes without chain guards. At the time the warning was issued, the exercise cycles had been involved in at least six finger crushing injuries and amputations to small children caused by contact with wheels, gears and pedal sprockets.

  • In September 1989, CPSC issued a warning about the 718E and 714 models of the Low Impact Climber, manufactured by Precor, Inc, because of a possible amputation hazard to children’s fingers. According to CPSC, the red pulley cord and black roller in the center section of the device creates a pinch point and has no finger guard. At the time of the warning, Precor and CPSC were aware of three incidents of finger amputation or lacerations caused by the device.
Legal Rights of the Injured
The law in most states provides individuals with legal claims and the right to compensation for injuries they suffer as a result of a defective product or the negligence of another. The injured person may file a lawsuit seeking compensation for his or her pain and suffering, medical expenses, lost past and future wages and punitive damages.
