Paper Shredder Defects
and Safety Issues |

| From January 2000 to December
2003, The Consumer Product Safety Commission received
31 reports of finger amputations, lacerations and
other serious injuries from paper shredders. The
majority of injuries were to young children ages
14 months to 2 years, whose fingers are often small
enough to fit through paper shredder openings. |
| In November 2000, General
Binding Corporation recalled about 3,000 paper
shredders due to risk of injury. The shredders
reportedly did not have a protective shield to
guard against exposure to the cutting blades. Consumers
could lift the paper shredder lid while the machine
was running and come into contact with the turning
blades, leading to serious lacerations or amputations
of fingertips. |
