Portable Fan Dangers and Defects

Portable fans, such as box fans, window fans, desk/table fans, pedestal/floor fans, and clip on fans, can pose a serious risk of finger entrapment, laceration and amputation when equipped with a defective grill or safety guard. Faulty wiring or power switches in these fans can pose a serious risk of electrocution or fire.
According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, there were over 4,500 fires associated with portable electric fans in the 1990s, resulting in more than 20 deaths and 270 injuries.
Portable Fan Safety Recalls
Many fans have been recalled over the past several years, often because they pose risks of electrocution, shock, fire, and finger amputation hazards.
  • In October 2004, New York Zion Trading Corp. voluntarily recalled about 2,500 Portable oscillating electric fans. The wiring of the fans was reportedly undersized and the power plug was not polarized, creating fire and shock hazards.

  • In June 2004, SMC Marketing Corp. and Home Depot U.S.A., Inc. voluntarily recalled about 2.2 million “SMC” brand oscillating floor fans. The electric power cord could reportedly be damaged by the oscillation motion of the fan. The damage to the cord could result in a short circuit and possible ignition of the plastic case, posing a fire hazard.

  • In December 2002, Brooklyn Lollipop Imports & Exports, Inc. voluntarily recalled about 22,000 electric fans because the fans reportedly had undersized wiring, used a power plug that was not polarized, had an improperly sized grill, and overheat.

  • In October 2002, Thrifty Paper Co. Inc. voluntarily recalled about 26,000 electric fans because the fans reportedly had undersized wiring, used a power plug that was not polarized, had an improperly sized grill, and overheat.

  • In November 2000, The Morton Paper Co. voluntarily recalled about 4,500 desk 16-inch "PIONEER" brand desk fans and Enterprises Co. Inc. recalled about 11,800 electric fans because they could reportedly overheat during use.
