Space Heater Dangers
and Defects |
|
| Space heaters self-contained,
free standing air heating appliances pose
serious safety hazards when used improperly or
when there are manufacturing defects. |
| The U.S. Consumer Product
Safety Commission estimates that each year, there
are more than 25,000 residential fires associated
with space heaters. More than 300 persons die in
these fires each year, and an estimated 6,000 people
receive emergency-room care for non-fire injuries
associated with space heaters, such as contact
burns. Furthermore, when there is improper venting
or imcomplete combustion of fuel burning heaters,
space heaters can pose a risk of carbon
monoxide poisoning. |
- In January 2005, Lakewood Engineering & Mfg.
Co. voluntarily recalled about 70,000 Model
5101 oil-filled electric radiator heaters.
The heaters welds could rupture, expelling
hot oil that can burn nearby consumers. Prior
to the recall, there were 28 reports of incidents,
including one serious burn injury from spewing
oil.
- In August 2004, Vornado Air Circulation Systems
Inc. voluntarily recaled about one million
portable electric whole room heaters because
a faulty electrical connection could cause
the heater to overheat and stop working, posing
a fire hazard to consumers. At the time of
recall, Vornado had received 24 reports of
heater fires.
- In February 2003, The U.S. Consumer Product
Safety Commission (CPSC) and Cadet Manufacturing
Co. announced the recall of more than 1.9 million
Cadet and Encore brand in-wall electric heaters,
distributed mainly in California, Idaho, Montana,
Oregon and Washington. The recall announcement
followed the resolution of the lawsuit filed
by CPSC staff against the company on January
14, 1999, which alleged that certain models
of the electric heaters were defective and
can overheat and catch fire. CPSC was aware
of more than 320 reports of heaters that smoked,
sparked, caught fire, emitted flames, or ejected
burning particles or molten materials. These
incidents allegedly resulted in three deaths,
two serious burn injuries and property damage
claims exceeding $1.2 million, which include
five partial or total house fires.

| The law in most states provides individuals with legal
claims and the right to compensation for injuries they suffer as a result
of a defective product or the negligence of another. The injured person
may file a lawsuit seeking compensation for his or her pain and suffering,
medical expenses, lost past and future wages and punitive damages. |
