Stove and Oven Dangers
and Defects |
|
| In 2004, General Electric
recalled over 28,000 Hotpoint, Kenmore and Americana
freestanding electric ranges and double wall ovens
because the ovens had faulty wiring which could
melt and short-circuit. |
| Some upright stoves
are unstable and if not fixed properly can
topple onto children. In a 2002 lawsuit involving
a child burned when she tipped her family's
kitchen stove over onto herself, it was found
that while the stove had been properly installed,
its design meant it was easily disengaged from
the back bracket intended to brace it, after
which it could be tipped using pressure applied
by just one finger. Thus, even a small child
could tip the entire stove over. The design
defect led to a victory for plaintiffs in court
and the stove was withdrawn from the market. |

| The law in most states provides individuals with legal
claims and the right to compensation for injuries they suffer as a result
of a defective product or the negligence of another. The injured person
may file a lawsuit seeking compensation for his or her pain and suffering,
medical expenses, lost past and future wages and punitive damages. |
