ADD | ADHD Drugs and Child Heart Attacks | Strokes: 2007 Update

ADHD | ADD drugs such as Adderall, Ritalin and Strattera may cause sudden death from heart attacks and strokes. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has received reports of sudden death associated with regular dosages of ADHD medications in children with preexisting cardiac abnormalities.
More than 2,500 children who took ADHD drugs went to emergency rooms in 2004, and about a quarter of them had serious heart or blood pressure problems, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported last year. Twenty-five deaths, 19 involving children, linked to the drugs were reported to the FDA from 1999 to 2003. Fifty-four strokes, heart attacks and other heart issues were also reported; some of those patients had previous heart conditions.
On February 21, 2007, the makers of Ritalin, Adderall, Strattera and other drugs treating attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder were advised by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to give patients and their parents an additional warning that those medicines could cause serious psychiatric and heart problems, including sudden death.
Legal Rights of Patients Injured By ADHD Medications
The law in most states provides several personal injury claims for persons who have been seriously injured by a prescription drug with dangerous, undisclosed side effects. These claims include strict liability for a defective product, breach of warranty, negligence, and misrepresentation.
Damages sought against drug manufacturers for side effects and injuries include:
  • Physical pain and suffering, mental anguish and physical impairment;

  • Medical expenses associated with the allegedly defective product; and

  • Loss of earnings and/or earning capacity.
