What is Acanthamoeba keratitis? |
|
|
| Acanthamoeba keratitis is an infection that may lead to vision loss with some patients requiring a corneal transplant. |
| The infection primarily affects otherwise healthy people who wear contact lenses. Symptoms of the infection can be very similar to those of other more common eye infections include eye pain or redness, blurred vision, light sensitivity, the sensation of something in the eye or excessive tearing, but Acanthamoeba is more difficult to treat. |
| Federal health officials have advised consumers to discard their AMO solution, current contact lenses and lens storage cases. However, if you have suffered symptoms of the eye infection please do not discard this evidence. |
| Instead, stop using your current contact lens, lens cases and AMO contact lens solution, mark each product with ‘Do Not Use" or ‘Contaminated’ and place in a bag or container. Store the bag or container in a safe place beyond the reach of children. If you have suffered a serious eye infection, these products can be tested for the presence of the amoeba that causes Acanthamoeba keratitis. Individuals should seek immediate treatment if they have symptoms of an eye infection as early diagnosis is important for effective treatment. |
