|
| The FDA has received
several reports of serious eye infections
that have been linked to the use of Advanced
Medical Optics (AMO) Complete Moisture
Plus Multi-Purpose contact lens solution.
AMO issued a recall in March 2007, but
the recall was insufficient and many people
continued to use the product after March
2007. |
| The FDA has received several reports of Acanthamoeba keratitis which have been linked to the use of Complete MoisturePlus Multi-Purpose Soltuion. Users of the AMO solution have reported eye infections dating back to January 2005. The link between the solution and the infection was identified as a result of an investigation by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), which found in a multi-state investigation to evaluate a recent increase in Acanthamoeba keratitis cases, the risk of developing Acanthamoeba keratitis was at least seven times greater for those consumers who used Complete MoisturePlus solution versus those who did not. |
| Acanthamoeba
keratitis is a rare infection caused
by a microscopic parasite that may lead
to vision loss. It usually affects one
eye and, in some cases, patients require
a corneal transplant as a result of this
eye infection. |
| The infection primarily affects otherwise healthy people who wear contact lenses. Symptoms of the infection can be very similar to those of other more common eye infections but Acanthamoeba keratitis is more difficult to treat. |

ADDITIONAL
AMO CONTACT LENS RECALL
INFORMATION |
|
|
|
| The main symptoms associated
with Acanthamoeba keratitis are: |
- Foreign object sensation in the eye
- redness;
- watery eyes;
- blurred vision;
- sensitivity to light;
- swelling of the upper eyelid;
- extreme pain.
|
| If you suspect that
you have Acanthamoeba keratitis but
have yet to see a physician, please do so immediately. Please
keep in mind, however, that Acanthamoeba
keratitis is often difficult to diagnose.
If you used AMO Complete Moisture Plus, please
tell your doctor that you used this solution. |
| Federal health officials
have advised consumers to discard their AMO solution,
current contact lenses and lens storage cases. However,
if you have suffered symptoms of the eye infection
please do not discard this evidence. |
| Instead, stop using
your current contact lens, lens cases and AMO
contact lens solution, mark each product with ‘Do
Not Use" or ‘Contaminated’ and
place in a bag or container. Store the
bag or container in a safe place beyond the reach
of children. If you have suffered
a serious eye infection, these products can be
tested for the presence of the amoeba that causes Acanthamoeba
keratitis. Individuals should seek immediate
treatment if they have symptoms of an eye infection
as early diagnosis is important for effective
treatment. |
| Manufacturers of medical
products have a duty to produce products that
are safe for their intended use. AMO specifically
had a duty to exercise reasonable care in the
formulation and production of its contact lens
solution. |
| AMO aggressively promoted
Complete Moisture Plus Multi Purpose to healthcare
professionals as well as to consumers with representations
that it was a "highly effective cleaning
agent" and that it "is effective against
the introduction of common ocular microorganisms." |
| On behalf of our clients
injured from use of AMO contact lens solution,
Lieff Cabraser has alleged: |
- AMO’s contact lens solution was
not effective in disinfecting contacts lenses,
and vastly inferior to other multipurpose
solutions available on the market;
- AMO’s own data demonstrated the product’s
lack of effectiveness in preventing the growth
of protozoa microorganisms, including "acanthameoba";
and
- Acanthameoba are directly associated with
a high risk of Acanthamoeba keratitis in
users of contact lens solution products.
|
| If you have been diagnosed
with AK, yes. "AMO has not yet acknowledged
its responsibilities to injured consumers," stated Wendy
R. Fleishman, a partner at Lieff Cabraser. "AMO
must compensate all users of its contact lens
solution who developed serious eye infections,
including reimbursing patients for the cost of
their surgeries and other expenses, and agree
to pay for necessary future medical care." |
| Through filing a lawsuit,
injured AMO contact lens solution users can seek
compensatory and punitive damages for the pain
and suffering they suffered, along with compensation
for past, current and future medical care and
punitive damages against AMO for the pain and
suffering inflicted on consumers. |
