Birth Defects Glossary Terms - Placenta
|
The placenta grows during pregnancy and stays connected to the wall of the uterus where it provides the fetus with nourishment. The placenta also secretes hormones that help regulate and maintain the pregnancy. In the placenta, nutrients, wastes, and gases are exchanged between the mother's blood and the baby's blood.

Studies have found a link between persistent pulmonary hypertension and other birth defects in infants due to their mothers taking certain SSRI drugs including Prozac, Paxil and Zoloft during pregnancy.
Parents of a baby with pulmonary hypertension or heart defects may be eligible to file a claim against the manufacturer of any drugs for depression prescribed during pregnancy for failing to adequately disclose the risk of adverse side effects.
