FDA Warnings on MRI Dyes Omniscan, Magnevist and OptiMARK

The FDA labeling highlights and describes the risk for NSF following exposure to gadolinium in patients with acute or chronic severe renal insufficiency and patients with acute renal insufficiency of any severity or undergoing a liver transplant. In these patients, the FDA recommends that healthcare workers avoid the use of dyes sold under the brand names of Omniscan, Magnevist, OptiMARK, MultiHance, and ProHance unless the diagnostic information is essential and not available with non-contrast enhanced magnetic resonance imaging.
The FDA also warns that the risk of developing NSF is increased during repeated or higher than recommended doses. Read the full FDA warning about gadolinium-induced Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis.
Legal Rights of the Injured
Several lawsuits have already been filed across the nation by patients who have developed the Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis as result of exposure to gadolinium. Manufacturers of Omniscan, Magnevist, OptiMARK, MultiHance, and ProHance may have allegedly known the potential for disaster for patients with weak or improperly functioning kidneys, and may be liable for personal injury claims.
The law in most states provides several personal injury claims for persons who have been seriously injured due to defective medical devices and treatments. These claims include strict liability for a defective product, failure to warn, and negligence.
Damages sought against drug manufacturers for producing defective products that injure patients can include compensation for:
  • Physical pain and suffering, mental anguish and physical impairment;
  • Past and future medical expenses;
  • Loss of earnings and/or earning capacity; and
  • Punitive damages for extreme wrongful conduct.
