Boston Scientific
Taxus Express Heart Stents Recall |
|
| On July 2, 2004, Boston
Scientific Corporation announced the recall of
200 units of its Taxus Express stents, a drug-coated
stent because of a problem with the implanting
procedure. Patients had been injured during the
removal of a tiny balloon placed inside the artery
to inflate the stent during surgery. |
| The recall does not
affect Boston Scientific stents already implanted,
as the problem arises during the surgical procedure
and not with the stent itself if surgery has
been successful. |
| On July 16, 2004,
Boston Scientific substantially expanded the
scope of its heart stent recall. It announced
a recall of 96,000 stents after additional
reports of patients deaths and injuries, confirming
that three patients had died and 43 others
were seriously injured during implantation
surgeries. The recall included 85,000 Taxus
stents, a fast-selling product that has captured
about 70% of the market for drug-coated stents,
and 11,000 bare-metal stents, a type of device
whose use is diminishing. |

|
| In response to the expanded
recall, the Wall Street Journal reported
that several leading hospitals had suspended use
of Boston Scientific's Taxus stent. The Wall
Street Journal also reported that the recall
also doesn't address another problem reported by
surgeons at several major medical centers. Doctors
complain that even when the balloon properly deflates,
it can be "sticky" and hard to remove.
On August 5, 2004, Boston Scientific announced
another expansion of the recall. |
| The law in most
states provides individuals with legal
claims and the right to compensation
for injuries they suffer as a result
of a defective product or the negligence
of another. The injured person may file
a lawsuit seeking compensation for his
or her pain and suffering, medical expenses,
lost past and future wages and punitive
damages. |
| This summary of
patient legal rights is not meant to imply
any Boston Scientific medical device or product
is defective. |
