| Lieff

dysfunction who were subsequently diagnosed non-arteritic
anterior ischemic optic neuropathy or NAION. |
| NAION,
described as a "stroke of the eye," occurs
when the flow of oxygenated blood to the optic
nerve is restricted. NAIO is often sudden, but
painless, in onset, most commonly being noticed
upon awakening in the morning after use of the
erectile dysfunction drug. NAION frequently leads
to permanent blindness, usually in one eye. |
| In July
2005, the FDA issued an alert for all three
drugs stating “a small number of men
have lost eyesight in one eye some time after
taking Cialis, Viagra or Levitra.” The
FDA further stated “we do not know at
this time if Cialis, Viagra or Levitra causes
NAION." |
| Subsequently,
in October 2005, the Health Research Group
of Public Citizen, after reviewing Food and
Drug Administration (“FDA”) databases,
concluded that Cialis, along with Viagra and
Levitra, “clearly have an adverse effect
on the eye.” |

| In lawsuits involving
Viagra, patients have filed suit against its
manufacturer, Pfizer, Inc. The lawsuits have
alleged that Pfizer failed to warn patients
of the risk of the side effect NAION. Plaintiffs
charge that Pfizer was aware of the substantial
risks that users could become blind from using
Viagra but failed to disclose these risks to
patients. |
