| Persistent Pulmonary Hypertension in Infants |
|
| Pulmonary hypertension -- also referred to as primary pulmonary hypertension (PPH) or pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) -- is a life-threatening condition that typically involves severe respiratory failure in a newborn infant and requires immediate treatment. The condition occurs in about one to two per thousand babies. |
| In 2006, the Food and Drug Administration issued an advisory about the potential benefits and risks of treatment with antidepressants during pregnancy. |
| Earlier, in a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine, researchers found an increased risk of persistent pulmonary hypertension (PPHN) in babies of mothers who used certain commonly prescribed antidepressants in late pregnancy. |
| Other studies awaiting final publication have shown a 2-fold increased risk of having a baby with a heart defect for mothers who received Paxil early in their pregnancy. |

| In 2005, the labeling for paroxetine (Paxil) was changed to reflect information from a study suggesting that exposure to Paxil during the first trimester may be associated with an increased risk of cardiac birth defects. |
| Parents of a baby with
pulmonary hypertension or heart defects
may be eligible to file a claim against the manufacturer
of antidepressant drugs prescribed during pregnancy. |
