Ortho Evra Patch: Stroke Side Effects and
Safety Risks |
|
| The Ortho
Evra contraceptive patch releases estrogen
through the skin into the bloodstream. Women
who use Ortho Evra are exposed to about 60
percent more total estrogen in their blood
than if they use a typical birth control pill
containing 35 micrograms of estrogen. |
| Among the
side effects reported have been debillitating
strokes, leaving some users almost completely
paralyzed. Ortho Evra
lawsuits have been filed nationwide on
behalf of women who have died or been seriously
injured by blood clots allegedly caused by
the Ortho Evra patch. |
| Since
its introduction to the market in 2002, over
ten million prescriptions have been written
for the birth control patch under the brand
name Ortho Evra. In 2004, there were 9,677
reports of adverse effects from Ortho Evra
birth control patch. |
| It has long been known
that estrogen can increase the risk of blood
clots and strokes (thrombosis). |
| On September 20, 2006, the FDA once again updated the warning label on Ortho Evra and also issued a new Medwatch letter on the drug. This new label includes the results of a study that finds a nearly two-fold increase in the risk of blood clots with the use of the Ortho Evra birth control patch over birth control pills. |
| In litigation
against Ortho-McNeil and Johnson & Johnson,
lawyers for Ortho Evra patients have charged
that from April 2002 to December 2004,
there were more than 500 serious health
problems reported associated with the patch
compared to 61 from the most popular form
of the pill. There were allegedly four
times as many strokes reported in women
wearing the patch compared to women on
the pill, even though the pill was taken
by the equivalent of three times as many
women. |
| The law in most states provides several personal injury claims for persons who have been seriously injured by a medical device or prescription drug with dangerous, undisclosed side effects. |
| Damages sought against
manufacturers of an allegedly dangerous prescription
drug typically include: |
- Physical pain and suffering, mental anguish
and physical impairment;
- Medical expenses associated with the
allegedly defective product; and
- Loss of earnings and/or earning capacity
|
| For persons who have
died, family members can bring a wrongful death
action. To learn more about the case against
the Ortho Evra patch, please
