November 20, 2001: FDA Approves Ortho Evra
The Food and Drug Administration approves Ortho Evra, a 1-inch square patch that slowly releases estrogen and progesterone when applied to the body.
April 30, 2002: Ortho Evra Birth Control Patch Introduced to Market
Ortho Evra, developed by the Johnson & Johnson Pharmaceutical Research & Development, L.L.C. and marketed by Ortho-McNeil Pharmaceutical, Inc., is introduced as the first birth control patch approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
July 16, 2005: Associated Press Reports Blood Clot Risk of Ortho Evra
The AP publishes an article stating that the risk of dying or suffering a survivable blood clot while using the Ortho Evra patch is about three times higher than while using birth control pills. The article reports that about a dozen women, most in their late teens and early 20s, died in 2004 from blood clots believed to be related to the birth-control patch Ortho Evra.
November 10, 2005: FDA Warns Ortho Evra Users of Risks of Blood Clots; New Prescribing Information Announced
The Food and Drug Administration warns users of the Ortho Evra birth control patch that they are being exposed to more hormones, and are therefore at higher risk of blood clots and other serious side effects, than previously disclosed. A strongly worded warning is added to the patch label that says women using the patch will be exposed to about 60 percent more estrogen than those using typical birth control pills.
