Rituxan and Deadly Brain Infection
|
|
| Rituxan,
a drug approved to treat rheumatoid arthritis and
non-Hodgkins lymphoma, has been linked to a rare
and deadly brain infection called progressive multifocal
leukoencephalopathy, or PML. Rituxan has also been
used by physicians for the treatment of systemic
lupus erythematosus, or SLE. |
| In
December 2006, the Food
and Drug Administration reported that two
patients with lupus that were prescribed Rituxan
died from the PML infection. The two deaths
are the first ones reported for so-called off
label uses for Rituxan. According to the
FDA warning letter, 23 rheumatoid arthritis
and lymphoma patients have contracted the brain
illness while or shortly after being treated
with Rituxan. |
| Rituxan
is a powerful immunosuppressant that eliminates
mature circulating B-cells for up to nine months.
This can allow previously inactivated and deadly
viruses such as J-C that most adults have to
be reactivated, causing PML. A devastating
neurological deterioration, PML has no known
cure. |
| The
law in most states provides several personal
injury claims for persons who have been seriously
injured by a prescription drug with dangerous,
undisclosed side effects. These claims include
strict liability for a defective product,
breach of warranty, negligence, and misrepresentation. |
| Damages sought against
pharmaceutical companies for serious injuries
due to drug side effects include: |
| In the case of the
patient's death linked to the drug, the surviving
family members may file a wrongful death
lawsuit against the drug manufacturer. |
| Our lawyers have
years of experience successfully representing
clients in personal injury cases involving
dangerous and defective prescription drugs.
If you or a family member have suffered adverse
side effects after using Rituxan, you may
be eligible to file a claim. We are currently
representing multiple families across America
whose loved ones died from PML. |
