Zyprexa Linked to Diabetes & Other Severe Side Effects

Zyprexa is the brand name for olanzapine, an atypical anti-psychotic drug manufactured by Eli Lilly that was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in 1996 to treat schizophrenia and acute bipolar disorder.
Though Zyprexa has been prescribed to over 20 million people in 84 countries, it has been linked to an increased risk of hyperglycemia and diabetes. Though the exact increase in risk is unknown, those with factors such as obesity or family history of diabetes are especially at risk. In some cases, hyperglycemia was resolved when the Zyprexa-use ended, but some patients required continuation of anti-diabetic treatment despite discontinuation of the suspect drug.
Other severe side effects include stomach and bowel problems, and in elderly patients being treated for dementia, death has been reported.
Under pressure from the FDA after reports diabetes and other serious blood sugar disorders, Eli Lilly modified the warning labels for Zyprexa in March 2004 to include the increased risk of hyperglycemia and diabetes.
Other popular atypical ant-psychotics include Risperdal, Seroquel, Clozaril have been associated with diabetes and other blood sugar disorders. Lawsuits have also been filed against the manufacturers of these drugs.

Legal Background: The Rights of Patients Injured by Prescription Drugs
The law in most states provides several personal injury claims for persons who have been seriously injured by a prescription drug with dangerous, undisclosed side effects. These claims include strict liability for a defective product, breach of warranty, negligence, and misrepresentation.
Damages sought against manufacturers of an allegedly dangerous prescription drug typically include:
  • Physical pain and suffering, mental anguish and physical impairment;
  • Medical expenses associated with the injuries; and
  • Loss of earnings and/or earning capacity.
For persons who have died, family members can bring a wrongful death action.
