Reuters Business Report, "Wyeth Lowers Profit View" |
Drugmaker Wyeth on Friday warned earnings for the year will fall short of expectations, as sales of its flagship hormone replacement products slowed after studies in July questioned the safety of the drugs. The news sent the stock price of Wyeth down more than 19 percent on the New York Stock Exchange.
In addition to lower numbers of prescriptions dispensed for hormone replacement therapy drugs Premarin and Prempro, Wyeth attributed the earnings shortfall to slower sales of vaccines, animal health treatments and consumer health care products. "Premarin was going to be a bump in the road, but the bump now looks a little bigger than many people thought earnings wise, especially when you throw in the non-Premarin issues," said Mario Corso of Leerink Swann & Co. |
