Associated Press, "Lawsuit over Comair crash cites airport signs, taxiway names" |
The family of a Canadian woman killed in a central Kentucky plane crash last month filed a lawsuit citing inadequate airport signs and confusing taxiway names and alleging that pilots were negligent in taking off from the wrong runway. The Aug. 27 crash of Comair Flight 5191 at Blue Grass Airport killed 49 people, with only pilot James Polehinke surviving. Polehinke is recovering from serious injuries.
Only Comair Inc. was named as a defendant, but the lawsuit said Anderson's family would file claims against the Federal Aviation Administration and the airport because of inadequate maps, signage and names of taxiways and holding positions. "The airport operation and infrastructure was well short of the international recommended practices and procedures," according to a 22-page study done for the California-based law firm that brought the lawsuit. The plane's pilots attempted to take off from a short runway used for small planes instead of a runway that is twice as long.
Spokeswomen for Comair, the FAA and Blue Grass Airport said they were awaiting the official report on the cause of the crash from the National Transportation Safety Board and had no comment.
