Christy Pimental received a new kidney last week, and with it, a new shot at a normal, healthy life. Pimental is one of 550 Kaiser Permanente members moved onto UC Davis Medical Center's transplant waiting list after Kaiser's fledgling program in San Francisco abruptly closed in May. Administrative bungling doomed the 2-year-old Kaiser operation, in which 2,000 patients had been awaiting kidneys before the program's failures became public, lawsuits were filed, and state and federal investigations began.
