Spinach Recall & E. Coli Food Poisoning: Scope of the Recall |
|
| The FDA, the CDC and the State of California, has determined that the spinach implicated in the outbreak was grown in the following California counties: Monterey, San Benito, and Santa Clara. |
| About 74 percent of the fresh spinach grown in the U.S. comes from California, according to the California Farm Bureau Federation. |
| 26 states have reported E. coli cases linked to tainted spinach. Wisconsin has reported the most cases, including the death of a 77-year-old woman. Arizona (8), California (2), Colorado (1), Connecticut (3) Idaho (7),
Illinois (2), Indiana (10), Kentucky (8), Maine (3), Maryland (3),
Michigan (4), Minnesota (2), Nebraska (11), Nevada (2), New Mexico (5),
New York (11), Ohio (25), Oregon (6), Pennsylvania (10), Tennessee (1),
Utah (19), Virginia (2), Washington (3), West Virginia (1), Wisconsin
(49), and Wyoming (1) have also reported E. coli incidents, according to the Centers for Disease Control. |
| Packaged spinach has been recalled throughout the United States, Canada and Mexico as a precaution after federal health officials issued official advisories against consuming spinach. The affected products were also distributed to Taiwan, Hong Kong and Iceland, though no illnesses have been reported from these countries except one case reported in Canada. The FDA continues to investigate whether other companies and brands are involved. |

|
| If you show symptoms of E. coli poisoning, please seek immediate medical attention from your healthcare provider and report your concerns to the CDC. Depending upon the specific strain, E. coli poisoning may be treated with certain types of antibiotics. |
| If you or a family member have suffered a serious injury or a loved one died after being exposed to E. coli from tainted spinach, you may be eligible to file a claim.
