Power
Drill Defects and Safety Issues |
|
| According to the
latest statistics from the Consumer Product Safety
Commission, there are annually about 6 deaths
and almost 6,000 emergency-room-treated injuries
associated with power drills. When power switches
are defective or when safety mechanisms are absent
or fail, power drills can pose a risk of serious
physical injury to consumers. |
- In May 2002, Ryobi Technologies recalled
about 6,000 RYOBI brand hammer drills.
The on-off trigger of the drills could
reportedly stick, or the lock-on button
could jam, posing a risk of serious injury.
- In May 2001, Milwaukee Electric Tool
Corp. and DEWALT Industrial Tool
Co. recalled about 58,000 electric
drills. The switches on the drills, which
were manufactured by Eaton Corp., could
reportedly stick and continue to operate
after the trigger is released, which
could lead to serious injury.

- In October 2000, 180,000 power tools were recalled
by three manufacturers due to potentially defective
power switches. The switches, manufactured by Eaton
Corp., could reportedly stick and the tool could
continue to operate after the trigger has been
released. The recalled tools included Makita-brand
rotary hammers, drills and screwdrives and Milwaukee
Electric Tool-brand band saws.

| The law in most states provides individuals with legal
claims and the right to compensation for injuries they suffer as a result
of a defective product or the negligence of another. The injured person
may file a lawsuit seeking compensation for his or her pain and suffering,
medical expenses, lost past and future wages and punitive damages. |
